Caught this video on another blog a few days ago. He's talking about the current state of the US, but it seems a lot like the world of online marketing to me.
I'm not here to make an example of any specific people, but want it to known the buyers of online marketing material aren't idiots.
So many of these "guru" crowd is living in some kind of fantasy world where everything they do is great. But is it really that great? I mean, everybody in the online marketing business is really on the payroll in some way, aren't they?
Don't get me wrong...there are some really sharp guys when it comes to getting traffic, making sales, and developing systems to product creation, distribution, or any number of things, but it seems as if they've been reading their own hyped-up sales letters when it comes to who they are as people.
Coming from the music business, I have a much different perspective from most of these guys. The music industry is one where products and those who create them are put under a spotlight, in front of millions of people. And as you can imagine, every one of those people has as an opinion on the product or the person behind it.
If you want to keep your head, you've got to know who you are and move forward with what you believe to be the best possible album, show, interview, or whatever else. You also can't believe folks from your own company as folks on the payroll are in the business of keeping their jobs.
We have a saying... "Don't read any press; especially your own."
The online marketing world is very similar. And as I said earlier, because everybody is on the payroll, or trying to be on it, a lot of stuff get squelched. Who is going to say that (insert guru name) is full of it when there is the potential of having that guy send out an email for you and make you tens of thousands of dollars?
Because of this, a lot of the gurus have developed a pretty thin skin. They're not open to the least bit of criticism. If you don't want to play their game, they take their toys and go home.
I've been at seminars where somebody will ask a question, only to get shot down by the panel for mentioning a product doesn't work. Whatever happened to not holding back on the "closely guarded secrets" that were supposed to be revealed?
And then you've got the guys who are pissed that they sold a product, some guy got it, and now he's selling it on Ebay at half the price. So what? UAW doesn't get pissed at all the used car dealers around the country. Used product is out there. Deal with it.
I could go on and on, but this isn't a bitch session. Again, I simply want to point out that buyers of online marketing material aren't that stupid and I recognize that.
Watch the video and you'll see what I'm talking about... By the way, this video may offend you and it's probably not a good idea to play it if you're at work. :)
By the way... While I don't think that buyers of online marketing materials are idiots, some of you guys are crybabies also. More on that shortly. :)
